 

Eight spectacular films were announced as winners on November 9 at the 22nd Annual
Banff Festival of Mountain Films. From 140 films submitted to the competition, a five
member international jury determined the award winners in six categories, and the audience
selected the winner of the People's Choice award.
GRAND PRIZE
$4000 sponsored by Eagle Creek Travel Gear and The Banff Centre for Management
This year's Grand Prize went to Puma: Lion of the Andes, an American
film focusing on the life of the shy and elusive mountain lion in Chile's Torres del Paine
National Park.
ALPINE CLUB OF CANADA AWARD FOR THE BEST FILM ON CLIMBING
$2000 - sponsored by the Alpine Club of Canada
A compelling New Zealand film, The Fatal Game (Director - Richard
Dennison, Producer - James Heyward, New Zealand, 1997) received the Alpine Club of Canada
Award for the Best Film on Climbing. The film tells the true story of a journey where one
man's dream became another man's nightmare.
BEST FILM ON MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT
$2000 - sponsored by Canadian Mountain Holidays
The Best Film on Mountain Environment was given to El Dorado
(Director/Producer - Frank Green , U.S.A., 1996, 57 min.), a film focusing on four local
residents of the Sierra Nevada Foothills - two timber workers and two environmentalists -
locked in an impossible deadlock on the fate of the Eldorado National Forest.
BEST FILM ON MOUNTAIN CULTURE

The French film, Gardarem lou Moussu (Director - Marianne Bernard
Producers - La Maison de l'Ours, Marenco Productions, France, 1995, 44 min.) took the
prize for the Best Film on Mountain Culture. This captivating film looks at the life of
shepards in the high remote valleys of the Pyrénées.
BEST FILM ON MOUNTAIN SPORTS
$2000 - sponsored by Banff Mount Norquay
Alp Fiction (Director - Dominique Perret, Producers - Dominique
Perret, Didier Lafond, Switzerland, 1995, 10 min.) featuring extreme skier Dominique
Perret, took the prize for the Best Film on Mountain Sports.
PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD

The winner of the People's Choice award was The Human Race (Director -
Peter Du Cane, Richard Dennison, Chris Hilton, Ulrich Krafzik, Producer - Andrew
