"Photographing in Alaska has taught me valuable lessons about composition. This is a big state with big vistas. The size of the landscape can be so visually overpowering that the viewer loses sight of the little details that make up the whole. While photographing I tend to seek out the essence of a place. For me true beauty lies in the details."

"I discovered this aspen grove during a visit to Telluride, Colorado. The discovery was purely serendipitous. The area was full of mature aspen trees, but the scene I saw as we drove past could only be viewed from one spot. As with a door to another dimension, if you stepped too far to the right or left, you would not see this anomaly. A perspective of aspens. I stayed in this grove for several hours photographing with a Hasselblad 500cm using a 100mm lens. For this image I bracketed between f16 and f22 to ensure that the aspens throughout the scene would remain in focus. Due to the long exposure required, a tripod and a cable release were used to minimize camera movement. I used Fuji Neopan Acros 100 for this image."

Tim Remick grew up in Richmond, Virginia, and moved to Alaska seven years ago to teach. He has worked with an incredible array of students over the years, teaching them how science can reveal the wonders of the world. According to Remick, his students have taught him to always be open to the possibilities of new discoveries and to retain a sense of wonder. It is with this as his mantra that he recently chose to change careers and pursue photography full-time. As a photographer, Remick is self-taught; he has worked in Anchorage, Alaska, as a freelance photographer for the past two years. His goals are to share the marvels and possibilities of today’s world, as well as to create in his audience stewards of the world’s wild heritage. Remick’s work has been featured in several one-person gallery shows around Anchorage. He is currently working on a public-lands project that he hopes to complete in this lifetime.
