Sir Edmund Hillary (New Zealand)
The Grand Gentleman of the mountains, Sir Edmund Hillary became a
household name around the world after his 1953 first ascent of Mount Everest with Sherpa
Tenzing Norgay. He has always insisted that his triumph be shared with all mankind and to
the betterment of the people of Nepal and the Himalaya. He has devoted a major part of his
life to this humanitarian end. Through the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, a Canada-based
organization, Hillary has helped build 26 schools, three airfields, two hospitals and 112
village clinics in Nepal and funded a 10-year reforestation program in Sagarmatha National
Park.
