Carlos Buhler
Carlos Buhler summited his first peak at the age of 15. Over 30
years later, Climbing magazine has dubbed him “the most
accomplished North American climber in the Himalaya”. The New
York Times called him a “super-alpinist”. His résumé
includes a long list of hard routes on big mountains, with a
vast array of climbers from all over the world. Among his
greatest feats is the 1983 ascent of Everest’s most technically
demanding route, the Kangshung Face, which has yet to be
repeated. Carlos has since become a leader in first ascents
using small, efficient teams and lightweight tactics,
accomplishing striking climbs on Ama Dablam’s Northeast Face (in
winter), and Changabang’s North Wall, among others.
On the Banff stage, Carlos Buhler will be
talked about the climbs that have meant the most to him. Some
of these were challenges on the Himalayan giants. Others were favourites from right here in the Canadian Rockies, where he
learned to become the world-class climber that he is today.
