"I Made It" Climber Göran Kropp Sure to Captivate Audiences Swedish adventurer Göran Kropp is the featured presenter for the Banff Mountain Book Festival 1999 Speaker Tour. Kropps unique story of travel from his home doorstep in Sweden to the top of Everest self-contained and under his own power is depicted in the 1997 film I Made It and in the newly released book Ultimate High, co-authored with David Lagercrantz. Kropp is appearing at several North American locations in October and November, listed below. In October 1995, Kropp left Stockholm on a bicycle, towing 240 pounds of gear. Five months later, on foot, he ferried the last of his gear to the base of Mount Everest. After being forced to turn back to base camp from within 350 vertical feet of the summit and after witnessing the aftermath of the Everest disaster that claimed the lives of eight other climbers, he refused to give up. He reached the summit on May 23 at the age of 29. Days later, he left for Stockholm ¾ on his bicycle. "Many people believe that I am a crazy guy....Nothing could be more wrong," said Kropp, who will share his inspiring tale of determination and achievement during his presentation. "Mountains are powerful touchstones of nature and spirit and Görans adventures reveal this," says Bernadette McDonald, director of The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture, which produces the Banff Mountain Book Festival. "Hell have listeners sitting on the edge of their seats as he tells stories about survival in the face of overwhelming odds." Kropps tour takes him to the following locations:
