Banff Mountain Film Festival Kicks Off World Tour

Hot on the heels of the screening of the world's best mountain films at the 24th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival, the 11th annual "Best of the Festival" World Tour has hit the trail with stops planned in more than 160 cities in 22 countries around the globe.

"This year's tour has a superb collection of films that are sure to captivate and excite audiences through their powerful images and words," promises Bernadette McDonald, Director of The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture, which produces the event.

The tour will wind its way through North America, Europe, six Asia/Pacific countries, Iceland, Chile, and Mexico. It will bring mountain stories to life on the screen for more than 74,000 people in North America alone.

The Banff Mountain Film Festival is an international film competition that features the world's best films and videos on mountain subjects. This year's event was held November 5-7 and filled nearly 7000 seats. Mountain enthusiasts watched 37 finalist films that were selected from an impressive 138 entries representing 22 countries.

Festival-goers also listened to guest speakers including Swedish adventurer Göran Kropp who travelled from his home doorstep to the top of Everest, self-contained and under his own power. His efforts were documented in the film I Made It and in his co-authored book Ultimate High. Kropp recently completed a highly successful and energetic 14-city North American tour as featured presenter for the Banff Mountain Book Festival Speaker's Tour.

In addition to films and speakers, mountain enthusiasts also took in lively seminars on mountain issues and saw the latest in outdoor gear at the adventure trade show.

While the Banff Mountain Film Festival and the Tour will reach thousands of people through live events, the Resort Sports Network (RSN) will spread these stories to even more people. RSN provides information and entertainment television programming to mountain resorts with coverage extending to more than 56 winter resorts and 46 summer resorts in the United States. This winter, the network will again present a selection of Banff Mountain Film Festival films from previous years.

With the approach of the new millennium, momentum is already building for the 25th Annual Banff Mountain Film Festival (November 1-3, 2000) and the Summit 2000, a two-day event to be held October 30 and 31 at The Banff Springs Hotel. This epic event, in advance of next year's film festival, will bring together 30 of this century's most celebrated mountaineers
