Professional Training Offered for Local Guides Imagine being expected to know every answer about Banff, no matter what the question. Imagine trying to educate and entertain visitors from every part of the globe. Imagine being a guide, an ambassador and a teacher, all rolled into one. Sound daunting? That’s the task that faces Banff tour guides, bus drivers and trip leaders every day. Luckily, help is available. From May 8 to 12, The Banff Centre for Mountain Culture will offer a training course aimed at Banff/Bow Valley guides and interpreters. The Professional Heritage Interpreters’ Certification Course covers all aspects of interpretation in Banff, from natural and human history, to the principles of good interpretation and communication, to hands-on tours of Banff/Lake Louise heritage sites and points of interest. The course is also an excellent preparation for those intending to seek certification from the Mountain Parks Heritage Interpretation Association. "This course reviews all the information and skills required in our certification process", said Gord Stermann, president of MPHIA. "It covers the factual material and skills sets that people need to be effective heritage interpreters in Banff. And it’s an excellent grounding for the MPHIA certification exam." Participants can attend the complete five-day course, or choose a three-day option focusing on natural and human history, or opt for a one day review concentrating on interpretation skills.
