Mountain Researcher Travels World’s Highest Regions

Jack Ives –
Mountain Prospects
Thursday, April 25, 7:30 p.m., Max Bell Auditorium, The Banff Centre

Buddhist monkAs United Nations University (UNU) senior advisor on mountain ecology and sustainable development, Jack Ives has traveled the world’s mountain areas — from Tibet to Madagascar and from Tajikistan to the Andes. On Thursday, April 25, Ives will mark International Year of Mountains by relating stories and sharing images from his more than 25 years in the field. This Mountain Culture Speakers’ evening will include the opening of Ives’ Mountain Prospects exhibition in the Max Bell lobby and a presentation at 7:30 p.m. in the Max Bell Auditorium.

Jack D. Ives has been involved with mountain and arctic research all his life: from undergraduate expeditions to Iceland to his work as founding president of the International Mountain Society. Ives has worked as coordinator of the United Nations University’s mountain ecology programme since 1978.

Ives says that Mountain Prospects is a natural outgrowth of his research work. "Given the task of undertaking fieldwork, or field inspection, in many mountain regions, it was my personal reaction to attempt a photographic record of both mountains and mountain people …. I hope [these images] reflect not just a commitment to the mountains and their people, but a deep sense of awe in the magnificent landscapes and an acknowledgement of the privilege of being welcomed by remarkable human beings. These people include some of the poorest in the world, yet they are rich in the sense of joy, curiosity, and their extensive local environmental knowledge…."

Tickets for the Mountain Prospects presentation on April 25, 7:30 p.m. in the Max Bell Auditorium are $5.00, free to Mountain Culture members. The exhibition opening reception begins at 6:30 p.m. Mountain Prospects will remain on display in the Max Bell lobby until September.
