Hand-signed Antarctica book sells for $20,000 at Banff Mountain Book Festival

A stunning, goat leather-bound book of photographs about the Antarctica was sold this weekend for CDN $20,000 at the 2003 Banff Mountain Festivals as the event drew to a close. Brian Hanson of Austin, Texas purchased the award-winning book from Pat and Rosemarie Keough of Salt Spring Island, B.C. who have spent more than 10 years on this project. All proceeds from the record sale will support the Save the Albatross Campaign.

Antarctica: Explorer Series, Volume 1 weighs 8.7 kg (19.2 lbs) and has been signed by 31 Antarctic personalities and legends including Queen Noor of Jordan in her capacity as Honorary President of BirdLife International, adventurer Sir Edmund Hillary, and Arctic explorer Ann Bancroft. The book’s images document the landscape, the wildlife, and abandoned buildings and outposts in Antarctica

There were 950 copies of the book printed. Each book cost CDN $1,800 to produce, not including marketing and distribution. At a sale price of US $2,900, with 950 printed, it is the most expensive new book in the world.

So far, Antarctic has received 14 major awards for excellence including Outstanding Book of the Year - Best Book Arts Craftsmanship in the Independent Book Publishers Awards 2003 competition. It also received a gold medal at the 2003 Gold Ink Awards, North America’s premier publishing honour.

Antarctica was produced in Canada. It was bound by Felton Book Binding in Georgetown, Ontario, and printed by Hemlock Printing in B.C. and is the world's first book to be printed with a revolutionary printing technology resulting in three times the resolution of normal, high-end lithography.

The sale was made at the Banff Mountain Book Festival Book Fair.
