March 14, 2003 Mountain Researcher Examines the Myths and Reality of Mountain Disasters Jack Ives – "Mountain Disasters" Learn more about mountain disasters at the next Mountain Speakers Series presentation. On Wednesday, March 26, Jack Ives will examine the myths and the reality of earthquakes, avalanches, landslides, and other natural disasters in mountain areas. His presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Max Bell Auditorium. Ives has traveled the world's mountain areas from Tibet to Madagascar, from Tajikistan to the Andes, in his role as United Nations University senior advisor on mountain ecology and sustainable development. Ives has been involved with mountain and arctic research all his life: from undergraduate expeditions to Iceland to his work as founding president of the International Mountain Society. He has worked as coordinator of the United Nations University’s mountain ecology programme since 1978. Jack Ives’ presentation is presented by Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre and the United Nations University as part of the 2003 Mountain Speakers Series. Tickets are $5.00 at the door, free to Mountain Culture members. |
