Implementing the 1997 Banff National Park Management Plan I: Restoring Wildlife Corridors and the Heritage Tourism Corporation
Tom Hurd, Jillian Roulet, and Pam Veinotte
This session discusses implementation of two important recommendations from the 1994-96 Banff Bow Valley Study were immediately implemented through the 1997 park management plan. First, a multi-million dollar project removed several facilities from the base of Cascade Mountain to encourage large carnivore movements through the area, and Parks Canada increased efforts to work with neighbouring agencies and municipalities to develop an interconnected set of wildlife corridors through the length of the Bow Valley. Secondly, Parks Canada worked with the Banff tourism industry to establish the Heritage Tourism Corporation with a central mandate to make all visitors and residents of Banff Nation

al Park and the Town of Banff aware they are in a national park and World Heritage Site by actively fostering appreciation and understanding of the nature, history and culture of Banff National Park, the Town of Banff and surrounding areas. The HTC encourages, develops and promotes opportunities, products and services consistent with heritage and environmental values, it encourages environmental stewardship initiatives upon which sustainable heritage tourism depends, and it strengthens employee orientation and training. These two initiatives have provided numerous benefits to help achieve the BNP Management Plan.
