Implementing the Jasper National Park Management Plan: Ecosystem Science and Involving People in Restoration and Recovery
Kevin Van Tighem, Jesse Whittington, Brenda Dobson, Alan Westhaver, Shawn Cardiff, and Carolyn Duchoslav
We present and discuss a series of five case studies that implement the Jasper National Park Management Plan through ecosystem restoration and/or species recovery. Each case study demonstrates an interdisciplinary approach. Ecosystem science informs problem definition, options development and decision-making, or is used in evaluating the effectiveness of a restoration or recovery approach. In each case, a key to restoration or recovery is the involvement of people from the local, regional or national community both as knowledgeable experts in their own domains and as interested stakeholders. Projects discussed are: 1) woodland caribou recovery, 2) wildlife corridor restoration near Jasper Park Lodge, 3) fuelbreak development around Jasper townsite area facilities, 4) trail reconfiguration in the Athabasca Valley to minimize wildlife disturbance, and 5) Jasper community involvement in restoration.
