“This photograph was taken in Boquete, Chiriqui, during my exploration of Panama’s green mountain highlands. This area has traditionally been known for its rich agricultural production, which includes coffee, strawberries, bananas, and flowers. Recently, however, the demographics and livelihoods of this region have shifted to accommodate retirees, mostly from the United States, Europe, and Canada, attracted to the comfortable climate, beautiful views, and the relative low cost of living. The image depicts the stark contrast between Boquete’s current rural state and imminent development, bringing attention to the relationship between man and nature. This photograph is part of a body of work that examines the trends and effects of over-development in my native country, Panama.”

Lorena Endara was born and raised in Panama City, Panama. She became interested in photography at the age of 12 and has been practicing ever since. She attended Sarah Lawrence College and earned a B.A. in liberal arts. Lorena’s passion for photography is directly linked to her love for travel and commitment to social justice. Her artwork is found in both private and public collections and it has been exhibited throughout the world, in places such as Brazil, Mexico, Poland, and the United States. In addition, Lorena is the founder and director of a non-profit organization, Fundacion Imaginer, dedicated to promoting contemporary art from Latin America.
